3D Underwater Cinematography and Footage

16 March 2013 - It's summer. It's mid-day. It's pitch dark. Pewel Achtel ascends down to film deep coral reefs off eastern coast off Tasmania. Who would have thought that the most colourful reefs are not found in clear tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef. The cold and inhospitable reefs off Tasmania hide some of the most spectacular coral reef found on Earth dazzling with colour and teaming with marine life.

Using the first and only 3D camera housing capable of 4k (and beyond) underwater images, we record those rarely seen reefs in HFR (High Frame Rate) using wide angle Nikon Nikonos 15mm submersible lenses. Despite high camera sensitivity at ISO 1600 and 20,000 lm of portable lighting, we shoot at f/2.8 and still gasp for more light.
